Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Professional Engineer with expertise in pavement evaluation, mix design, and construction materials laboratory testing to join our team. The successful candidate will contribute to various projects related to pavement design, construction, and maintenance, and will provide valuable input in mix design for asphalt and concrete, as well as testing and analysis of construction materials.

Responsibilities

Pavement Evaluation:

  • Perform pavement condition assessments using visual inspection and advanced pavement management systems.
  • Conduct field testing and analysis to evaluate pavement performance and determine necessary repairs or upgrades.
  • Develop pavement design recommendations and strategies based on evaluation data.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for pavement rehabilitation, repair, and resurfacing.

Mix Design:

  • Develop and optimize asphalt and concrete mix designs in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and performance criteria.
  • Collaborate with other engineers or teams to ensure mix designs meet the requirements for durability, strength, and workability.
  • Oversee and/or conduct laboratory tests on raw materials and finished mixes to verify compliance with standards.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of mix designs in the field, and recommend adjustments as needed.

Construction Materials Laboratory Testing:

  • Oversee operations of central materials testing laboratory.
  • Coordinate with and oversee Laboratory Manager in conducting laboratory tests on construction materials, including aggregates, soils, concrete, asphalt, and other materials used in construction projects.
  • Analyze and interpret test results and prepare detailed technical reports.
  • Ensure compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, and other relevant testing standards.
  • Work with Quality Assurance Manager to facilitate maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functioning and adherence to safety protocols.

Project Management and Collaboration:

  • Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and project managers to ensure the successful execution of projects related to pavement evaluation, mix design, and materials testing.
  • Review and interpret construction plans, specifications, and contracts to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and industry best practices.
  • Participate in site visits to monitor the implementation of pavement design and construction materials standards.

Quality Assurance and Compliance:

  • Ensure all materials and mix designs meet regulatory, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Monitor and oversee quality control functions during construction activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of testing, analysis, and design work for future reference and compliance audits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in civil engineering with a focus on pavement evaluation, mix design, and construction materials testing.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within one year, required.
• Relevant certifications in materials testing or mix design are a plus (e.g., ACI, DOT certifications).
• Proficiency in pavement evaluation techniques and pavement management systems (PMS) a plus.
• Strong knowledge of asphalt and concrete mix design principles.
• Expertise in field and laboratory testing of construction materials (aggregates, soils, concrete, etc.).
• Familiarity with industry standards (ASTM, AASHTO, etc.).
• Knowledge of software tools for data analysis, reporting, and project management (e.g., Excel, AutoCAD, Pavement Management Software).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting findings and working with project teams.
• Basic understanding of construction methods, site safety, and environmental regulations is helpful.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Willingness to work in both field and office environments and travel to project sites as needed.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and demonstrate a proactive, collaborative mindset.

Travel Requirements

• This position requires moderate travel, approximately up to 40% of the time, in support of business
objectives and client engagements. Travel may be both scheduled and on short notice, depending on
project needs. Destinations typically include job sites, field locations, or regional offices, where work may be conducted in outdoor or operational environments. Adherence to all company safety protocols and
use of PPE is required during travel and on-site work.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • This position operates in a hybrid work environment, requiring flexibility to work effectively from both a
    laboratory and field work setting.
  • Professional Office
    • This position primarily operates in a professional office environment, requiring the ability to work
      at a desk for extended periods while using a computer, phone, and standard office equipment.
    • The position involves sitting for extended periods, performing data entry, and engaging in
      frequent communication via email, phone, and in-person interactions.
    • The role involves regular communication with team members, clients, and stakeholders, both in
      person and through virtual platforms.
    • The physical demands of the job may include occasional standing, walking, bending, and lifting of
      office materials up to 15 pounds.
  • Laboratory Environment:
    • Regular exposure to moderate to loud noise levels from laboratory equipment, ventilation
      systems, and instrumentation.
    • Routine handling of chemicals, biological samples, and lab equipment, requiring adherence to
      strict safety protocols.
    • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, safety goggles, and
      respiratory protection.
    • Possible exposure to chemical odors, dust, or temperature fluctuations within the lab
      environment.
  • Field Environment:
    • Work at outdoor sites including wetlands, forests, grasslands, construction zones, and
      undeveloped land.
    • Travel on foot across uneven, rugged, or obstructed terrain, sometimes in areas inaccessible by
      vehicle.
    • Exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, humidity, rain, or sun.
    • Possible presence of insects, animals, or natural and man-made hazards in field environments.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to lift and carry between 35–75 lbs. of equipment or samples over distances up to 75 feet.
    • Ability to stand, walk, drive, and operate lab and field equipment for extended periods.
    • Frequent use of hands and arms for sampling, operating tools/instruments, data entry, and
      testing procedures.
    • Ability to bend, twist, reach, stoop, kneel, climb, and balance as needed during both lab and
      fieldwork.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats in varied environments,
      often while wearing PPE.
    • Ability to use sensory capabilities to see (including close and distant vision, color perception,
      depth perception, and focus) and smell for observation and safety purposes.
