Position Overview

 

The Experienced Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Field Technician is responsible for performing both field and laboratory testing on construction materials, including soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates, to ensure compliance with project specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

 

In this hands-on role, you will play a critical part in maintaining the quality and integrity of construction projects by collecting accurate data, observing site conditions, and preparing detailed reports.

 

This position is ideal for someone with experience in construction materials testing who is detail-oriented, safety-focused, and thrives in outdoor work environments. Responsibilities

 

  • Collect and test soil, concrete, and other construction materials in line with project specifications.
  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate testing equipment, ensuring proper functionality and compliance with company and manufacturer standards.
  • Assist with drilling operations, including rig setup, site preparation, and assembling/disassembling equipment.
  • Operate tools such as pneumatic jackhammers and pressure washers for equipment cleaning and maintenance.
  • Perform manual labor tasks and maintain drilling rigs, trucks, and work areas to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Complete accurate daily time and labor reports, and submit required documentation on schedule.
  • Maintain assigned company vehicles, including regular service, inspections, and upkeep.
  • Follow strict safety protocols and OSHA regulations at all times.
  • Report to job sites on time, adapt to changing schedules, and work extended or weekend shifts when needed.
  • Travel to local and out-of-town project sites, including overnight stays as required.
  • Support project goals and company initiatives by performing additional duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree or relevant technical training preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of field experience in construction materials testing or a related discipline.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, technical specifications, and perform general civil engineering calculations.
  • Knowledge of construction materials testing methods, ASTM standards, and soil classifications.
  • Ability to accurately complete field-testing paperwork and detailed figures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills: define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and the public.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work outdoors in various conditions, and travel between job sites.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ICC Certifications or the ability to obtain them quickly.

 

Travel Requirements

 

This position requires extensive travel, approximately up to 70% of the time, in support of business objectives and client engagements. Travel may be both scheduled and on short notice, depending on project needs. Destinations typically include job sites, field locations, or regional offices, where work may be conducted in outdoor or operational environments. Adherence to all company safety protocols and use of PPE is required during travel and on-site work.

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment

 

  • Work normally performed outside includes exposure to weather conditions such as precipitation, extreme
    cold or heat, dusty and noisy work environments.
  • The physical requirements for this position may include and are not limited to:
    • Ability to lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs
    • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time as well as drive long distances
    • Frequent use of hands and arms for typing, telephone
    • Ability to bend, twist, reach, stoop, pull, kneel, lift, carry, and push repetitively
    • Ability to speak and hear effectively to communicate sometimes with noisy environments
    • Ability to see, smell, hear and touch as well as reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel
      and sit
    • Ability to regularly lift and/or move/shake up to 40lbs. (soil and/or concrete tests and related
      apparatus); frequently lift and/or move up to 60lbs. (soil and sand samples, and nuclear density
      equipment); and occasionally move more than 100lbs. (such as a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete
      samples)
