The Regional Director of Business Development serves as a growth leader for UES’s Midwest Region, playing a critical role in shaping and executing strategic initiatives that drive long-term business success. This position goes beyond traditional sales leadership—it’s about leading regional growth efforts, guiding key client pursuits, and aligning market strategies with the evolving enterprise vision. Rather than managing a large team of sales representatives, this leader focuses on cross-regional collaboration, developing future business development talent, and building the structure to support sustainable growth across the region.

Responsibilities

The Ideal Candidate

  • Strategic Builder – Thinks long-term and understands how to design sustainable business development structures and pipelines.
  • Collaborative Influencer – Gets things done through cross-functional partnerships.
  • Client-Facing Leader – Able to communicate value at an executive level and secure enterprise-level opportunities.
  • Team & Culture Developer – Committed to developing others and ensuring succession within the BD function.
  • Adaptable & Future-Focused – Embraces change and sees ambiguity as opportunity.

Strategic Leadership

  • Partner with regional and national leaders to align business development initiatives with long-term organizational growth goals.
  • Develop and lead region-wide strategic pursuits (e.g., major public/private sector infrastructure projects, power/energy initiatives, government and data center opportunities).
  • Act as a thought partner to operations and executive leadership, identifying emerging markets and growth pathways.
  • Help shape the region’s go-to-market strategies, pipeline planning, and opportunity capture processes.

Growth Enablement & Collaboration

  • Collaborate with branch and area managers to influence local BD strategies—ensuring alignment, removing roadblocks, and enabling success without direct oversight of individual sellers.
  • Lead cross-office and cross-functional efforts to pursue large, complex projects across geography or verticals.
  • Champion succession planning by identifying, mentoring, and developing high-potential BD talent within the region.

Process, Consistency & Structure

  • Drive regional BD process improvement and adoption of consistent sales practices, metrics, and tools across markets.
  • Serve as the regional lead for cross-branch coordination on marketing, branding, proposal development, and client outreach.
  • Partner with corporate marketing to advance region-specific campaigns and support major pursuits.

External Engagement & Market Positioning

  • Represent UES at high-impact industry events and conferences to increase visibility and thought leadership.
  • Cultivate executive-level client relationships and serve as a trusted advisor on long-range partnership opportunities.
  • Continuously scan the market for strategic shifts and competitor movements to refine positioning.

Compensation & Opportunity

  • Base Salary + Bonus eligibility based on regional growth and strategic impact.
  • Defined opportunity to influence UES’s enterprise growth model and future leadership pipeline.
  • Career path to VP-level and above for candidates who demonstrate vision, leadership, and results.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • 10+ years of business development, operations, or sales leadership in the AEC industry.
  • Prior experience overseeing large, multi-state territories or complex cross-market initiatives.
  • Understanding of geotechnical, environmental, or construction materials testing services a plus.
  • Proven experience leading strategic pursuits and influencing without direct authority.
  • Experience developing internal talent pipelines and building high-performing teams.
  • Willingness to travel regularly across the Midwest Region (IN, OH, MO, KY, AR, TN, KS).
